Biography

Alex Haigh, winner of the Opera Awards Foundation Bursary in 2016, read Music and Drama at Hull University, and performed many operas there including the title role in Kurt Weill’s The Teacher and Father Seven Deadly Sins.  He received a scholarship from Trinity Laban Conservatoire to complete a Master Degree in vocal performance. Whilst there, he performed The Mayor Albert Herring, Ferrando Così fan tutte, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni and Tamino Die Zauberflöte.

Subsequently he studied at the Berlin Opera Academy, performing Scaramuccio Ariadne auf Naxos. He attended English National Opera’s ‘Opera Works’ course, and participated in masterclasses organised by Opera North, the Opera Awards and Opera Prelude, working with Robert Tear, Dame Sarah Connolly, Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Simon Keenlyside and Stuart Skelton.

Since then roles have included Zinoviy Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk district (Fulham Opera), Rodolfo La bohème (Opera Holloway), Narciso Il Turco in Italia (Proper Opera Company) and Night Watchman and Fritz in La nonne et Sanglante (Gothic Opera).  Other roles include Nemorino L’elisir d’amore, Alfredo La traviata, The Moon The Enchanted Pig, seven roles in The Original Chinese Conjuror (comic contemporary opera by Raymond Yiu), Monsieur Triquet Eugene Onegin and Gamaccio Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamaccio.

More recently has has sung Frederick The Pirates of Penzance (Porcupine Productions), La Remendado Carmen (Longborough Festival), title role Albert Herring (New Palace Opera) and the covers of Parpignol La Bohème and Prince Gvidon The Golden Cockerel for English Touring Opera.  He performs regularly in concert and his repertoire includes Gounod St Cecilia Mass, Mendelssohn Lauda sion, Mozart Requiem and Handel Messiah which he has performed at St John Smith Square.

Alex Haigh is currently a member of the Royal Opera House, where he has sung Remendado Carmen and Stig in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Festen.  Covers include Messenger Aida, The Fool Wozzeck, Gastone La Traviata, and Nathanael Les Contes d’Hoffmann.  He has also given a solo recital in the Paul Hamlyn Hall.
