Thomas Colwell

Thomas Colwell started singing as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral Choir School in London performing in many major concert venues as well as tours of France, Spain and Japan. He was also the soloist on a number of recordings and sang the title theme to a Channel 4 drama, ‘The Big Battalions’. He began singing lessons with Ann Lampard at the Junior Royal Academy before continuing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Robert Alderson. He now studies with Gary Coward.

Roles include Escamillo (Opera’r Ddraig/Wedmore Opera), Helmsmann Tristan und Isolde (Longborough Festival), Marcello La Bohème (Opera up Close performed in the Ravenna International Festival), and Dr Bartolo Il barbiere di Siviglia (Magnetic Opera in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival). Other operatic repertoire includes Junius The Rape of Lucretia, Smirnov The Bear, Curio Giulio Cesare, Figaro Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Alfonso Cosi fan tutte, Pooh Bah The Mikado, Lord Mountararat Iolanthe and Pirate King Pirates of Penzance. In summer 2015 he took part in the Tête-à-tête Opera Festival singing the role of the Inn Keeper in a new opera by Louis Mander Oh whistle and I will come to you my lad.

Last season he sang Morales/Dancairo for a seven-week run of Carmen at the Soho Theatre, London, and covered Marcello and Yamadori for English National Opera.

Last summer he returned to Longborough Festival Opera to perform in Jenufa and created the role of Beowulf in a new opera by Louis Mander Beowulf, commissioned by Cantata Dramatica and performed by Opera Chilmark.
