Alexander Hontsa
Born in Belarus Alexander Hontsa graduated from the vocal department of the Glinka Minsk State Musical College. In the same year he entered the Rimsky Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatoire in the class of the People’s Artist of the USSR, professor I.P. Bogacheva. While still studying he performed the title role in Eugene Onegin at the Opera and Ballet Theater of the Conservatory. He has participated in the master classes of Galina Vishnevskaya, Dmitry Vdovin, Sergei Leiferkus, Mikhail Lansky, Tito Kapobyanko, and Neil Shicoff.
Since graduating he collaborated with such conductors as Valery Gergiev, Pavel Smelkov, Fabio Mastrangelo, Peter Feranets, Andrei Anikhanov, Vladimir Popov, Dmitry Khokhlov, Mikhail Tatarnikov, Alexei Nyaga and Viktor Bokman. In 2010-2013 he was a principal artist in the drama theatre Aleko (St. Petersburg). Since then he has been soloist with the Mikhailovsky Theatre, the State Chamber Music Theatre “St. Petersburg Opera” the Mariinsky Theater, and currently with the Zazerkalye Theatre. His repertoire includes both Yeletsky and Tomsky The Queen of Spades, Robert Iolanta, the title role in Rachmaninov’s Aleko, title role Macbeth, Marcello, Belcore, Silvio, Don Giovanni, and Papageno. He recently made his role debut as Il Conte Le Nozze di Figar at the Zazerkalye Theatre.
He has toured in concert to Germany, Poland, Belarus and the Baltic Countries performing with the State Russian Concert Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic. D.D. Shostakovich under Vladimir Popov and many others. He was soloist of the festival “Opera for Everyone.”
He has been a prize winner at the VI International Three Centuries of Classical Romances Festival-Competition (St Petersburg, 2008), the III International Vishnevskaya Competition (Moscow, 2010), the V International St Petersburg Competition for Opera Singers (St Petersburg, 2011) and the IV International Shtokolov Competition for Opera Singers (St Petersburg, 2014).
